
Apparently these were originally used to provide emergency lighting in submarines during the cold war. This has no impact on the way we use them now, but it does make them sound seriously cool.
The science of how it works is simple. A tiny amount of tritium gas is sealed inside the little vial which has an internal coating of phosphor. Electrons emitted from the tritium cause the phosphor to glow for up to ten years. So cool and long lasting too.
